Samsung BlackJack II - black (AT&T)

The good: The Samsung BlackJack II improves on its predecessor with Windows Mobile 6; GPS; a 2-megapixel camera; and more memory and better performance. The smartphone also features a larger display and enhanced full QWERTY keyboard as well as HSDPA support, Bluetooth, and AT&T Video Share support.

The bad: The front jog wheel feels loose and unresponsive, and the smartphone uses Samsung's proprietary connector port for headsets and other accessories. The BlackJack II lacks Wi-Fi, and there's also no support for voice dialing. We also had some ActiveSync connection problems.

The bottom line: Although the Samsung BlackJack II doesn't bring any revolutionary upgrades, there are a number of welcome additions, including GPS and better performance, to make it a worthy successor and a good-value smartphone.

The bottom line: The Samsung Impression isn't perfect, but it ranks high on our list as a messaging and multimedia phone.

The good: The Samsung Memoir has a handsome and slim design with a styling that makes it look like a camera. The TouchWiz interface makes navigation a breeze and we love that you can upload your photos directly to online sharing sites. The photo quality is top-notch, and the overall feature set is very impressive. It has great performance as well.

The bad: The Samsung Memoir lacks Wi-Fi, its Web browser is not the greatest, and the touch-screen interface takes some acclimation. You are limited to preloaded TouchWiz widgets.

The bottom line: If you don't mind the price, the Samsung Memoir lives up to its promise as a top-notch camera phone.

The good: The LG enV(2) is a slim and attractive handset, with a roomy keypad, bright dual displays, a good multimedia feature set, a full QWERTY keyboard, plus great call quality.

The bad: The LG enV(2) does not offer newer features from the first enV. Also, photo quality was mediocre, and the external display can be a bit too small. Streaming video quality could also be a lot better.

The bottom line: The LG enV(2) is not much more than a slimmed down version of the enV, but it still serves as an excellent high-end messaging phone.

LG Incite CT810 (AT&T)

Product summary

The good: The LG Incite is an attractive touch-screen phone with Windows Mobile 6.1. Features include a whole host of productivity and multimedia features like Microsoft ActiveSync, Office Mobile, and a 3-megapixel camera. It offers both Wi-Fi and HSDPA connectivity. Call quality was good.

The bad: The LG Incite has rather sluggish performance, and we weren't always pleased with the touch interface. We also think the surface can be a bit too reflective, and we don't like that the stylus isn't built-in.

The bottom line: Though we weren't pleased with LG Incite's design quirks, we think that overall, it's a very good first entry in the U.S. smartphone market.

LG enV Touch (Verizon Wireless)

Product summary

The good: The LG enV Touch has two beautiful displays, a nice touch-screen interface, and a great QWERTY keyboard. It has impressive features, such as a 3.2-megapixel camera, EV-DO Rev. A, and a full HTML Web browser.

The bad: The LG enV Touch's touch-screen interface could use some refinement, and the Web browser experience is not as smooth as we would like. Visual Voice Mail and corporate e-mail support costs additional monthly fees. The lack of Wi-Fi is disappointing.

The bottom line: The LG enV Touch's combination of great design and top-notch features makes it one of the top Verizon Wireless Wireless phones we've ever seen.

The bottom line: Despite some important missing features, a slow data network, and call quality that doesn't always deliver, the Apple iPhone sets a new benchmark for an integrated cell phone and MP3 player.

The good: The iPhone 3GS finally adds common cell phone features like multimedia messaging, video recording, and voice dialing. It runs faster; its promised battery life is longer; and the multimedia quality continues to shine.

The bad: The iPhone 3GS' call quality shows no improvements and the 3G signal reception remains uneven. We still don't get Flash Lite, USB transfer and storage, or multitasking.

The bottom line: The iPhone 3GS doesn't make the same grand leap that the iPhone 3G made from the first-generation model, but the latest Apple handset is still a compelling upgrade for some users. The iPhone 3GS is faster and we appreciate the new features and extended battery life, but call quality and 3G reception still need improvement.
