Telephone

A traditional landline telephone system, also known as "plain old telephone service" (POTS), commonly handles both signaling and audio information on the same twisted pair of insulated wires: the telephone line. Although originally designed for voice communication, the system has been adapted for data communication such as Telex, Fax and Internet communication. The signaling equipment consists of a bell, beeper, light or other device to alert the user to incoming calls, and number buttons or a rotary dial to enter a telephone number for outgoing calls. A twisted pair line is preferred as it is more effective at rejecting electromagnetic interference (EMI) and crosstalk than an untwisted pair.

The telephone consists of an alerting device, usually a ringer, that remains connected to the phone line whenever the phone is "on hook", and other components which are connected when the phone is "off hook". These include a transmitter (microphone), a receiver (speaker) and other circuits for dialing, filtering, and amplification. A calling party wishing to speak to another party will pick up the telephone's handset, thus operating a button switch or "switchhook", which puts the telephone into an active (off hook) state by connecting the transmitter (microphone), receiver (speaker) and related audio components to the line. This circuitry has a low resistance (less than 300 Ohms) which causes DC current (48 volts, nominal) from the telephone exchange to flow through the line. The exchange detects this DC current, attaches a digit receiver circuit to the line, and sends a dial tone to indicate readiness. On a modern telephone, the calling party then presses the number buttons in a sequence corresponding to the telephone number of the called party. The buttons are connected to a tone generator circuit that produces DTMF tones which end up at a circuit at the exchange. A rotary dial telephone employs pulse dialing, sending electrical pulses corresponding to the telephone number to the exchange. (Most exchanges are still equipped to handle pulse dialing.) Provided the called party's line is not already active or "busy", the exchange sends an intermittent ringing signal (generally over 100 volts AC) to alert the called party to an incoming call. If the called party's line is active, the exchange sends a busy signal to the calling party. However, if the called party's line is active but has call waiting installed, the exchange sends an intermittent audible tone to the called party to indicate an incoming call.

The phone's ringer is connected to the line through a capacitor, a device which blocks the flow of DC current but permits AC current. This constitutes a mechanism whereby the phone draws no current when it is on hook, but exchange circuitry can send an AC voltage down the line to activate the ringer for an incoming call. When a landline phone is inactive or "on hook", the circuitry at the telephone exchange detects the absence of DC current flow and therefore "knows" that the phone is on hook with only the alerting device electrically connected to the line. When a party initiates a call to this line, and the ringing signal is transmitted. When the called party picks up the handset, they actuate a double-circuit switchhook which simultaneously disconnects the alerting device and connects the audio circuitry to the line. This, in turn, draws DC current through the line, confirming that the called phone is now active. The exchange circuitry turns off the ring signal, and both phones are now active and connected through the exchange. The parties may now converse as long as both phones remain off hook. When a party "hangs up", placing the handset back on the cradle or hook, DC current ceases to flow in that line, signaling the exchange to disconnect the call.

Calls to parties beyond the local exchange are carried over "trunk" lines which establish connections between exchanges. In modern telephone networks, fibre optic cable and digital technology are often employed in such connections.Satellite technology may be used for communication over very long distances.

In most telephones, the transmitter and receiver (microphone and speaker) are located in the handset, although in a speakerphone these components may be located in the base or in a separate enclosure. Powered by the line, the transmitter produces an electric current whose voltage varies in response to the sound waves arriving at its diaphragm. The resulting current is transmitted along the telephone line to the local exchange then on to the other phone (via the local exchange or a larger network), where it passes through the coil of the receiver. The varying voltage in the coil produces a corresponding movement of the receiver's diaphragm, reproducing the sound waves present at the transmitter.

A Lineman's handset is a telephone designed for testing the telephone network, and may be attached directly to aerial lines and other infrastructure components.

What is a Telegraph?

A telegraph is a machine which is used for transmitting messages in the form of electrical impulses which can be converted into data. A message sent via telegraph is called a telegram or cablegram, while someone who operates a telegraph machine is known as a telegrapher. Telegraphy was a major mode of communication from the middle of the 1800s until well into the 1900s, before ultimately being supplanted by inventions like the telephone and the internet.

The earliest version of the telegraph was developed in the late 1700s, primarily as a thought exercise. This early draft only existed on paper, but it laid the groundwork for various incarnations of the telegraph which appeared in the early 1800s. With the development of the e;ectromagnet, Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail were able to develop and patent a reliable electric telegraph system in 1837.

Morse is often credited with being the inventor of the telegraph, but this is not the case. Numerous other inventors had patented various versions of the telegraph before Morse, and history strongly suggests that Alfred Vail was the scientific brains of the operation. Morse popularized the telegraph, however, and developed a workable, easily learned alphabet which could be transmitted via telegraph.

Originally, telegraph machines had to be connected through a series of wires in order to exchange messages. The operator would key a message in the Morse alphabet, and the receiving telegraph machine on the other side would register the message in the form of clicks made by a bar which struck another bar. By listening to the pattern of clicks, the receiving operator could hear the message and transcribe it before passing it on to the recipient.

In the late 1800s, wireless telegraphy began to emerge, and telegraph messages were transmitted over the radio. This marked a drastic change in the system, allowing people to rapidly transmit messages in areas without telegraph cables, and enabling things like ship to ship communication. Wireless telegraphy or radiotelegraphy also laid the groundwork for later methods of communication.

The telegraph is largely obsolete now. One famous telegraph company, Western Union, sent its last telegram in 2006, and numerous other companies have stopped offering telegram services, because consumer demand has fallen radically. Telegrams are generally regarded as interesting curiosities, as is the peculiar language used in telegrams; because transmitting the signal is painstaking, telegraph operators developed their own shorthand to make more rapid.

What is Telecommunications?

Telecommunications is a general term for a vast array of technologies that send information over distances. Mobile phones, land lines, phones and all technologies -- just one field of telecommunications. Radio, television and networks are a few more examples of telecommunication.

While most people associate telecommunications with modern technologies, the strict definition of the term encompasses primitive and even ancient forms of telecommunication. Among these is the use of smoke signals as a kind of visual telegraph. Puffs of smoke were time-released by smothering a fire with a blanket, then quickly removing and replacing the blanket. Widely used by the American Indians, smoke signals could communicate short messages over long distances, assuming a clear line of sight.

Other forms of early telecommunications include relay fires or beacons. Used foremostly in warfare, relay fires required a handful of men posted along a range of hilltops, with the last man closest to the area where troop movement was expected. When armies were spotted in the distance, he would light a bonfire. The fire could be seen from a good distance away by the next man in the relay, who would in turn light his own bonfire, and so the fires were lit in succession along the range, creating an effective telecommunications signal that traveled back over several miles in a relatively short period of time. Finally, the last man in the relay would light a beacon to signal his army below that the opponent was en-route.

The arrangement of a ship's flags and semaphores were other forms of telecommunications. A semaphore was a mechanical device atop a tower with paddle-like blades or flags. The device would be set in a specific position to communicate information.

Throughout the 19th century, telecommunications devices became more sophisticated with the advent of electricity, leading to the telegraph, and signal lamps. A signal lamp, the optical version of the telegraph, is a powerful lamp with shutters that block the light in long or short durations to translate to the dots and dashes. A heliograph is another optical telegraph -- a mirror used to reflect light to mimic a signal lamp.

In the 20th century, telecommunications reached beyond our planet. In June 1969, the world watched and listened as astronauts walked on the moon. Twenty years later, in August 1989, we would see pictures of Neptune arrive back from the voyager 2 spacecraft, riding radio waves that traveled over roughly three billion miles (4.8 billion km) to reach us in a matter of a few hours.

Strides in telecommunications have changed the world immeasurably. While pockets of humankind were once isolated from each other, people now have multiple ways to see and hear what is occurring on the other side of the world in real time. Satellite technology, television, the internet and telephony keep the globe connected in a humming buzz of interactive voices and pictures. In short, telecommunications has come a long way from smoke signals.

Telephone Service

Telephone service at MSU is provided by a privatized, digital Nortel DMS-100 Centrex telephone switch. The switch provides dial-tone for approximately 14,000 administrative telephone numbers and approximately 11,300 student telephone numbers that have a 517 area code and one of the four prefixes 353, 355, 432 or 884.

Administrative users must contact us for service and student users must contact University Housing for any telephone-related concerns.

Departments can choose to connect to MSU telephone service in two ways. The first method is to connect each telephone number directly to a single telephone instrument located in an office or lab. The second, and more complex method, is to connect each telephone number to a departmental or building-wide telephone system. In this scenario, each user has a proprietary telephone instrument in their office or lab that connects to this centralized system for telephone number access and other advanced features.

Each administrative telephone number can provide faculty and staff with a standard set of digital Centrex features including 5-digit dialing, campus transfer, three-way calling, and caller ID. Each telephone number also allows the greater campus community to access the University Operators, campus voice mail, long distance, and automatic call distribution (ACD), among other features.

Consulting and analysis service is available to help you identify the telephone system and service option that best meets your individual or departmental requirements.
